PRACTICE HISTORY
1850 The Architectural Practice was established in Ipswich about the year 1850 by JOSEPH R. CATTERMOLE.
1860 WILLIAM EADE joins the Practice about 1860. Style of firm - CATTERMOLE AND EADE. On the retirement of JOSEPH CATTERMOLE, WILLIAM EADE continues to practise under his own name.
1890 E. THOS. JOHNS joins WILLIAM EADE and the Practice becomes EADE & JOHNS.
1907 On the retirement of WILLIAM EADE, E. THOS. JOHNS continues to practice in his own name.
1921 MARTIN JOHNS SLATER joins E. THOS. JOHNS.  The Practice now functions as JOHNS AND SLATER.
1932 On the retirement of E. THOS. JOHNS in 1932, MARTIN SLATER continues the Practice on his own account under the previous title.
1949 BIRKIN HAWARD joins MARTIN SLATER. The style of the firm continues as JOHNS AND SLATER and later on as JOHNS SLATER AND HAWARD.
1957 ERIC SANDON and DOUGLAS HARDING amalgamate with the firm. The Practice becomes SLATER, HAWARD, SANDON AND HARDING but also continues to practice separately as JOHNS SLATER AND HAWARD and SANDON AND HARDING as before the amalgamation.
1962 The amalgamation dissolves. MARTIN SLATER retires. BIRKIN HAWARD continues to practice as JOHNS SLATER AND HAWARD. WILLIAM CARPENTER and JOHN HARDING join as Partners.
1965 The Practice first establishes its own Building Services Consultancy Section.
1972 RAYMOND WESTLAKE and HANS FLECK become Partners, the Firm's name remaining the same.
1978 The style of the Practice becomes JOHNS SLATER AND HAWARD, CHARTERED ARCHITECTS AND SERVICES CONSULTANTS.
1981 DONALD HENDRY becomes a Partner and PETER WHITEHOUSE becomes the first Services Partner.
1982 BIRKIN HAWARD retires. The Practice continues with WILLIAM CARPENTER, JOHN HARDING, RAY WESTLAKE, HANS FLECK, DON HENDRY and PETER WHITEHOUSE as Partners.
1988 PETER WHITEHOUSE (Building Services Partner) dies on 11th July aged 43 years after a long battle against cancer.
1989 DENNIS COWARD and ERIC BENTON become Partners on 1st May.
1990 MARTIN SLATER dies aged 97 on 7th January. WILLIAM CARPENTER and JOHN HARDING retire on April 30th.
1991 HANS FLECK and RAY WESTLAKE retire on July 31st. The Firm's name remains as JOHNS SLATER AND HAWARD practising as ARCHITECTS AND BUILDING SERVICES CONSULTANTS.
1994 DON HENDRY and DENNIS COWARD retire from the Practice on 1st February. The Firm's name remains the same as JOHNS SLATER AND HAWARD but practising as ARCHITECTURAL AND BUILDING SERVICES CONSULTANTS with ERIC BENTON as Principal.
1996 The Practice moves on July 1st after forty six years in Foundation Street to Sorrel Horse Mews practising as JOHNS SLATER AND HAWARD BUILDING SERVICES CONSULTANTS with ERIC BENTON as Principal. Architectural Services continue to be provided through DON HENDRY and DENNIS COWARD as Consultants to the Practice.
2002 BIRKIN HAWARD dies aged 89 on 9th February.
2004 The Practice incorporates on May 1st with ERIC BENTON, ADRIAN CATCHPOLE and NEIL RUTHERFORD becoming directors of JOHNS, SLATER AND HAWARD LTD.
